For starters all of that depends on the course itself and its not tough , you just need to have the right attitude required to pursue the discipline you choose.
Lets divide the courses into various types :
Professional courses would include courses like BCom,BBA,Law,MBA etc
Research Based courses would include BSc,BA etc.
One of the basic criteria is your marks in previous classes/courses,however more than the marks itself the attitude you have in the personal interview matters most.
How you present yourself in front of them carries a lot of weight when it comes to selection.
In case of BBA/BCom where the is stages like micro presentation you’ve got a bonus to make a first impression in front of the panel , show off your skill sets.A good orator gets an edge in these cases, if you happen to be nervous about public speaking just be normal (easier said than done), in case you’re very un comfortable mention that to the panel to avoid looking like a fool.
**Don’t lie to the panel. You must realize that these people have an average experience of 15 years so trying to fool them is out of the question.
In case you get grilled for something like poor marks / a year drop etc.
Here’s my personal case :
I applied for BSc EMS ( Economics,Mathematics,Statictics), one of the toughest courses in the science deanery and had failed in Maths in my Pre-Boards and produced that report card in front of them. When grilled about poor marks in Maths (I did’nt have an Economics background hence Maths in 12th Std was the only eligibility criteria I fullfilled) I responded saying that despite having a lot of genuine excuses in my pocket I refuse to give any, as the only reason a student performs poorly is beacause he/she did’nt study, period.
I also cited the example of a friend who had lost a parent during the boards and still managed to perform better than me, having said that I requested the panel to consider my case as I was really passionate about the subject and wanted to pursue it.
** Now that I had established some form of legitimacy I slowly pulled out my legitimate excuse explaining my poor marks which they accepted gracefully.
**PS. I also answered all the subject related questions asked on the spot besides a couple of them.
Result : SELECTED.
