Guide to Install a Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger

1. Site Preparation

  • Ensure the foundation is level, solid, and can support the exchanger’s weight.

  • Check for proper clearance around the unit for maintenance and operation.

2. Inspection Before Installation

  • Inspect the exchanger for any shipping damage.

  • Remove all protective covers, plugs, and packaging materials.

  • Check nozzle alignment and cleanliness.

3. Lifting and Positioning

  • Use appropriate lifting equipment (slings, hooks) at designated lifting points.

  • Never lift by the nozzles or attachments.

  • Carefully place the unit on its foundation or mounting supports.

4. Piping Connections

  • Connect the inlet and outlet pipes to the correct nozzles (shell side and tube side).

  • Avoid excessive force or misalignment that can strain the nozzles.

  • Use flexible connectors if needed to absorb vibration or thermal expansion.

5. Venting and Draining

  • Ensure proper vent and drain connections are installed to remove trapped air and fluid during start-up and shutdown.

6. Support and Anchoring

  • Secure the heat exchanger using anchor bolts or brackets to avoid shifting or vibration.

  • Tube bundles, if removable, should be easily accessible for inspection and cleaning.

7. Testing and Leak Checks

  • Perform a hydrostatic test or pressure test (as per spec) to check for leaks.

  • Inspect all gaskets and flange connections.

8. Insulation and Safety Covers

  • If required, apply insulation to minimize heat loss and for personnel protection.

  • Install guards or covers on hot surfaces if the area is accessible.

9. Commissioning

  • Start with low flow rates and slowly bring the system to operating conditions.

  • Monitor for pressure, temperature, and flow rate stability.

  • Check for any unusual noise, leaks, or vibration.
