The vintage bowl game has been around since the first contemporary bowl games in 1922. The early games were simple: 12 teams would participate in a single-elimination tournament, and there were no boundaries on how many teams could play in a single game or how many times a team could play each opponent. In the retro bowl conference playoffs and bowl games, there are no limits on how many times a team can play each other. During the regular season, a selection of colleges from every era take part in the annual Classic Bowl. This is a bowl game that commemorates the bowl game's origins, the Classic Bowl Presentation, and the Classic Bowl itself.
