American Airlines has revised its missed flight policy to provide passengers with alternatives in the event of a missed flight. If you are unable to make the flight, you do have the option of rebooking your flight with American Airlines.

American Airlines Missed Flight Policy

• American Airlines allows its passengers to change their itinerary within 15 minutes of departure if they cannot make it to their flight on time.


• American Airlines will automatically book you on an alternate flight if there is a delay due to internal/operational concerns. To avoid missing your flight due to AA flight delays, the company offers this as compensation.


• The compensation for any flight that is delayed by more than three hours (departures or arrivals within the EU) is up to 700 euros.


• For late flights and rebooking during delays, American Airlines does not charge anything.


• No-shows on AA flights will not be refunded, except in some emergencies.


• The airline will not compensate you if you deliberately miss your flight entirely for your own fault.


• A 2-hour rule has been set by the US Department of Transportation for every airline. Under this rule, passengers running late for their flight can choose a standby on the next available flight free of charge. This is within 2 hours of departure.

It is critical to let American Airlines know in advance if you plan on taking advantage of its missed flight policy or the compensation offered. As a missed flight standby option, American Airlines won’t let you check your bags unless you have AAdvantage Elite Status.
